This presentation deals with key modern approaches to software development using the COBISS system as an example. The development of information systems has changed significantly in recent years, as it now encompasses not only technical solutions but also processes, security, user experience, and long-term operational stability. Concepts such as agile development, DevOps and automation (CI/CD), modern testing approaches, and the use of artificial intelligence will be presented.
Special emphasis will be placed on security (including in the context of NIS2 requirements), upgrade management, and ensuring system performance and reliability. Newer aspects of development will also be addressed, such as the mobile-first approach, the accessibility of web solutions, and inclusive development, which enables the system to be used by a wider range of users.
An important part of the presentation is the role of libraries as active co-creators of the system. The diverse needs and expectations of approximately 1,500 libraries present a unique challenge that requires striking a balance between flexibility, standardisation, and stability. The presentation thus offers a comprehensive view of the development of COBISS as both a technological and a community-based system.
