Organisation of information and cataloguing: the foundation for information specialist training and COBISS system user experience
Teaching and learning efficient information organisation are complicated processes for both lecturers and students. Teaching cataloguing is not easy, as the students must be familiar with a large number of complicated contents, and what is more, years of experience are required for high-quality cataloguing. All the required knowledge and skills must be successfully transferred to the students through lectures where information organisation and cataloguing are taught. The lecturers have been trying for a long time to find the best way for the knowledge transfer process to be as successful as possible. The presentation will demonstrate the goals and methods of learning and teaching information organisation and present the meaning and position of future information science specialists in today’s web environment. The practical work and teaching process of cataloguing at the Department for Information Sciences in Osijek will be demonstrated, and the results of a survey on the experience with and opinion about the COBISS system and the mode of carrying out workshops for descriptive cataloguing in a virtual environment, which was carried out in November 2020 among students of the undergraduate and postgraduate programme of the Department, will be presented.
