Are the Libraries in Macedonia Prepared for the Application of Artificial Intelligence (AI)?

23. October, 202411.30–11.45

Artificial intelligence (AI) is one of the new trends in libraries and plays a significant role in transforming public libraries into dynamic places that, besides their primary function of lending books, will simultaneously create and provide access to digital information, resulting in a transformation of the libraries into digital centers. The library processes that are based on data entry, as well as the tasks or procedures that are repetitive, can be fully automated. For example, there is a possibility for the application of artificial intelligence in library processes such as cataloging, reference services, search and retrieval systems, etc. An inevitable question that arises is whether and to what extent are libraries and librarians prepared to respond to the opportunities and challenges offered by artificial intelligence. The libraries in Macedonia accepted the challenge of change and more than thirty years ago began the process of automation of the library operations, and for many years now they have been working on digitizing the library materials. Are the libraries ready to take the next step and enable the application of artificial intelligence in libraries, primarily to meet the demands and needs of their users? What will be the role and importance of the librarian in the implementation of the opportunities offered by AI?
