The introduction of a new content standard based on the concept of entity-relationship cataloguing (ERC) raises important questions related to the implementation and possible changes of the COBISS.SI system. In order to develop a standardized metadata scheme (format) and software, it is necessary to: 1) define ERC concepts according to the content standard and subject marking system, 2) design the architecture and functional requirements of applications/products, 3) specify the methods of migration/transformation of existing databases, 4) find solutions for connected systems and 5) design support training programs for system users. In order to define the strategy, a project was therefore carried out in the first phase, which included an overview of various systems abroad and case studies and formats, implementation scenarios, features of the COBISS.SI system and mutual databases, etc. Some findings and strategic orientations will be presented.
