Development of the Slovenian Cataloguing Rules and Implementation of Entity-Based Cataloguing in COBISS.SI

Abstract

The need for consistent and flexible rules for describing all types of library resources, which would enable better utilization of bibliographic data and greater efficiency of library catalogues, years ago led to the decision to modernise Slovenian cataloguing practices in accordance with the international metadata standard for the digital environment, Resource Description and Access (RDA). The purpose of this presentation is to present the process and developmental aspects of drafting the Slovenian cataloguing rules and the implementation of entity-based cataloguing in COBISS.SI.

The first part will address the key conceptual and operational foundations for drafting the Slovenian cataloguing rules based on RDA. The strategic goals and activities to date related to the preparation of the rules will be presented, as well as decisions regarding their design and structure. Some of the challenges we face in their preparation will also be summarised (e.g., linguistic challenges in translating terminology).

The second part will present the activities related to the preparation of the basic architecture for the gradual introduction of entity-based cataloguing into the COBISS.SI system, particularly the enhancement of the concept of shared cataloguing and the enrichment of records. The starting points for the development of an open data policy will also be summarised.
