The Transformation of Special Librarians and Special Libraries in the Open Science Ecosystem

Abstract

The development of open science is significantly reshaping the operations of research institutions and strengthening the role of libraries as key pillars of scientific communication and their sustainable future. In the Slovenian context of the national Action Plan for Open Science and initiatives such as the SPOZNAJ project and the establishment of an open science monitor, the roles of special librarians are changing significantly: from providing traditional library services to actively participating in the entire research process (advising on open access, managing research data, depositing in repositories, monitoring compliance with open science principles). The systematic involvement of librarians in the implementation of open science principles within research organizations contributes to the faster development and greater visibility of special libraries in their respective environments. Special librarians must therefore develop and expand their competencies and be actively involved in the entire process of scientific communication (consulting, analysis, indexing, depositing, research). This presentation, using the Slovenian Forestry Institute as an example, demonstrates the implementation of open science principles, with an emphasis on changes in work processes, the development of new competencies, and the adaptation of organisational culture, while also highlighting the role and tasks of the institutional library in this changed environment.
